Goonj

In the race of development, we all are too focused on machines i.e. the big, known issues, ignoring the needles- the most important basic needs.  At GOONJ our focus is this needles.- With a large scale civic participation it is not only becoming a big people’s movement for development but is also creating a parallel economy where every work doesn’t have to wait for money; huge quantities of old re-usable material becomes a valuable resource. Over the last decade, a parallel economy which is not CASH based but TRASH based is emerging. GOONJ has reached parts of 22 states in partnership with over 250 grass-roots organizations, Ashoka Fellows, social activists & social movements.

Our mission is two-fold: to empower young people to build thriving, sustainable careers and to provide employers with the highly-skilled motivated talent they need. We have a skills-training methodology that we believe can serve hundreds of thousands—and eventually millions—of unemployed and underemployed young people a year. And we’re proving that this training creates real business value for employers and lasting career impact for participants—so everyone has the incentive to invest in skills.

With a passion for teaching, we have always reflected and debated on the purpose of education, and state of the current education system. Children lack the clarity, confidence and support system to move towards the path of realizing their potential. Unless we make learning relevant to the real world, they will not possess the skills, tools and mindsets needed to be impactful individuals in the 21st century. We call this gap the Story of Unrealized Potential. To bridge this, We are designing and implementing innovative scalable solutions to shift the learning experience of adolescents so that they have a choice and a voice in their own education.

About 10 years ago, the idea of a farm was born. Rachna, an educationist, & Dinesh, an IT professional, being in Bangalore resolved to return to the hills for building a sustainable living based on natural and organic farming. It took 6-7 years to give shape to the idea – scouting for a place, building a house and infrastructure etc, and eventually, farming became operational about 3 years ago. A key objective for us is to live off the land if we eat what we produce and depend on the outside world only for things that we cannot grow. While there is some distance to go to meet this objective, we believe we are on the right path. We continue to plant a number of trees on the property as well as surrounding areas & meet our irrigation requirements via water harvesting. One day we hope to become a showcase for organic farming to the farmers of the region and encourage them to adopt it.
